Hazards and observation

  • Hazard: something that could cause danger
  • Developing hazard: a risk that is becoming more serious
  • Observation: watching the road early and carefully
  • Blind spot: an area mirrors do not fully show
  • Awareness: noticing what is changing around you
  • Anticipation: expecting what another road user may do next

Speed and distance

  • Stopping distance: thinking distance plus braking distance
  • Thinking distance: how far you travel before braking starts
  • Braking distance: how far you travel after the brakes are applied
  • Following distance: safe space behind the vehicle in front
  • Tailgating: following too closely
  • Aquaplaning: tyres losing grip on standing water

Road position and movement

  • Lane discipline: staying in the correct lane
  • Merge: join moving traffic safely
  • Priority: who should go first
  • Overtaking: passing a slower vehicle
  • Undertaking: passing on the left when it is not allowed
  • Dual carriageway: a road with a central divider between directions

Junctions and crossings

  • Give way: let other traffic go first
  • Box junction: yellow criss-cross area you must not block
  • Pedestrian crossing: a place where people cross the road
  • Zig-zag lines: markings near crossings where stopping is restricted
  • Level crossing: where the road crosses a railway
  • Filter lane: a lane used for a specific turn or direction

Motorway and major roads

  • Motorway: a high-speed road with controlled entry and exit
  • Hard shoulder: edge strip for emergencies only
  • Central reservation: barrier or strip dividing opposite directions
  • Contraflow: temporary system where traffic uses the other side of the road
  • Slip road: entry or exit road joining a motorway or dual carriageway
  • Variable speed limit: speed limit that changes on overhead signs

Restricted routes and lanes

  • Bus lane: lane reserved for buses and other permitted vehicles
  • Clearway: route where stopping is heavily restricted
  • No waiting: sign that bans parking or waiting in that place
  • No stopping: stronger restriction that bans stopping at all
  • One-way street: road where traffic moves in one direction only
  • Cycle lane: marked lane for cyclists

People and road users

  • Vulnerable road user: someone more at risk, such as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist
  • Pedestrian: a person walking
  • Motorcyclist: a person riding a motorbike
  • Horse rider: a person riding a horse on or near the road
  • Emergency vehicle: police, ambulance or fire service vehicle on urgent duty
  • Escort vehicle: vehicle helping guide an abnormal load

Weather and conditions

  • Fog: thick mist that reduces visibility
  • Glare: bright light making it harder to see
  • Skid: tyres sliding because grip is lost
  • Black ice: hard-to-see ice on the road surface
  • Spray: water thrown up by tyres in wet weather
  • Low sun: bright sunlight that can reduce visibility

Vehicle condition

  • MOT: annual safety and roadworthiness test for many vehicles
  • Tread depth: depth of the grooves in a tyre
  • Tyre pressure: amount of air inside the tyre
  • Head restraint: support behind the head to reduce neck injury
  • Windscreen: the main front window
  • Demister: system that clears mist from windows

Signs and markings

  • Warning sign: sign that warns about danger ahead
  • Mandatory sign: sign telling you what you must do
  • Prohibition sign: sign telling you what you must not do
  • Chevron: direction marker, often around sharp bends
  • Reflective studs: road studs that help lane guidance in the dark
  • Road marking: painted line, symbol or message on the road surface

  • Pass mark: the score needed to pass
  • Weak area: a topic where the learner needs more practice
  • Readiness report: the paid full-mock result summary
  • Flag for review: mark a question to come back to later
  • Timed mock: full test using the countdown clock
  • Topic practice: practice focused on one category only

  • Proceed: continue forward
  • Yield: give priority to other traffic
  • Reduce speed: slow down
